FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL CHOLESTEROL EDUCATION
MONTH:
TEAFLAVIN® IS NATURAL, GREEN TEA EXTRACT WITH DOCUMENTED
HUMAN CLINICAL
TRIALS TO LOWER LDL-CHOLESTEROL
Study Published in Archives of Internal
Medicine Documents Effectiveness of an Enriched
Tea Extract to Lower LDL-C by 16.4 Percent with No Adverse
Effects.
Nashville, Tenn. - September 15, 2004 - For millions
of Americans bordering on dangerously high cholesterol,
learning the value of a healthy diet and exercise coupled
with the natural cholesterol-lowering effect of Teaflavin® (www.nashai.com)
- the first tea extract with clinical trials in humans
to show a cholesterol-lowering effect from tea - may be
one of the most important lessons learned during September,
National Cholesterol Education Month.
In July, 2004 U.S. health officials issued new guidelines
recommending people at very high risk of heart attack -
such as cigarette smokers, those with existing cardiovascular
disease, or poorly controlled high blood pressure - lower
their LDL to less than 70 milligrams per deciliter, from
the previous goal of 100. The guidelines also recommended
drug therapy for high-risk individuals with LDL levels
of 100 or higher.
"While studies show that cholesterol-lowering Rx statin
medications are extremely effective, there's also solid
scientific evidence that Teaflavin®, the all natural,
caffeine-free product now available to consumers as a 375
milligram daily capsule, not only lowers LDL-C by 16.4
percent but also raises HDL - good cholesterol - by 3-4
percent," says Jim Zhao, Ph.D., a molecular biologist and
Chief Science Officer, Nashai Biotech, LLC. "The idea is
to do everything natural first."
According to the American Heart Association, people with
total cholesterol of 240 and above have double the risk
of heart disease as those who keep their cholesterol under
200. The study published in Archives of Internal Medicine (6/23/03)
showed one reason why people who consume large amounts
of green tea have a lower risk of heart disease. Developed
by Nashai Biotech, LLC, Teaflavin®, the concentrated
tea extract, offers a practical way to get the benefits
of tea without side effects, because one dose delivers
the benefits of 35 cups of green tea.
The double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-group
trial involved 240 men and women age 18 or older on a low
fat diet, with baseline LDL-C (bad cholesterol) between
130-190. After 12 weeks, those who received a 375 milligram
daily capsule containing the tea extract lowered their
LDL-C by 16.4 percent and raised HDL - good cholesterol
- by 3-4 percent. Teaflavin® represents the highest
concentration of tea flavonoids on the market today.
"Since there are few people who can or will drink that
amount of tea, Teaflavin® is a safe, non-pharmacologic
and cost-effective option - a first-line therapy for maintaining
healthy cholesterol levels," concludes Zhao.
